A Typical Club Evening – Improving Your Communication skills
Meetings give members the opportunity to practice chairing
meetings, give impromptu speeches, presenting prepared speeches and
offering constructive evaluations. The following provides an explanation
of the key roles:
Chairing Meetings
The Toastmaster for the evening will explain the format and outline
the programme of events and ensure that the evening runs smoothly. This
is an excellent role for those who want to improve their skill at
chairing meetings.
Educational
Most evenings we have an opportunity for one of the more experienced
speakers to speak for 10 to 15 minutes on a subject of their choice
on public speaking. These sessions are informative and entertaining
and of value even to experienced speakers.
Table Topics
Table topics develops impromptu speaking skills. The Table Topics
Master will select a theme, and invite members of the club to speak
on a topic for a maximum of two minutes. You have no preparation
so this is a good exercise for thinking on your feet. Good impromptu
speaking is particularly useful in meetings and we offer a safe environment
in which to develop this important skill.

Prepared Speeches
These speeches may last from 5 to 15 minutes and focus on a particular
aspect such as 'Body Language', ‘Structuring Your Speech’ or
'Using props'. Members are free to talk about any subject they wish.
Your first speech will be the 'ice breaker', a four to six minute
speech about yourself that will introduce you to the club.
Evaluation
This is where we provide advice on your development as a speaker.
Every speech is evaluated by another member of the club whose purpose
is to provide friendly and constructive feedback. At the same time it will give you
more confidence as a public speaker by pointing out your strengths
and areas to improve.
General Evaluation
This may be provided by a guest from another Toastmaster club or
a club member, who will evaluate the whole evening. One role of the
General Evaluator is to evaluate the evaluators by giving them positive
and constructive feedback to enable them to grow in the Evaluator
Roles.
