Newbury Speakers Celebrate Their 25th Anniversary - 6th June 2009
The club celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a black tie dinner and dance at the Newbury Manor Hotel. The evening was hosted by Tony Henderson-Newport and speeches were heard from Ray Wilton (Club President), Jenny Mills (founder member) and Freda Hendle (Past President). A special video message was played from Randy Lanning of St. Clair Toastmasters, Swansea, Illinois. It was Randy, then Captain Randall Lanning of the USAF stationed at Greenham Common, who was responsible for starting the club back in the mid-1980s. After dinner the guest speaker, the polar explorer Hannah McKeaned, enthralled the audience with the story of how she managed to set a world record for skiing from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole, a 690 mile journey that she completed in just 39 days.

Toastmasters National Conference - 9th-10th May 2009
Every year in May Toastmasters in the UK and Ireland (known as District 71) holds its national conference and this year it was held close to home in the Cotswolds. The contest also hosts the finals of the UK and Ireland International Prepared Speech and Evaluation contests, with finalists from clubs across the UK and Ireland. The standard was amazing and the winner of the International Prepared Speech Contest, Gareth McHale from the Northavon Club, will now represent District 71 at the International Toastmasters conference in the United States in August this year.

Newbury Speakers Club, for the second year running, was represented in a unique way. Last year in Killarney in Ireland, Club President Phil Gladwell and VP Education Tony Henderson-Newport presented to the conference on the benefits of Speechcraft and forming new clubs (Newbury Speakers was the sponsor club for Vodafone Speakers, also based in Newbury).

This year, Phil was involved in the organisation of the event and Tony (VPE) presented on a new initiative (proposed and funded by Newbury Speakers club) on a UK and Ireland Website competition. The intention is for clubs to compete by carrying out improvements to their existing website, or perhaps creating a new club website.

The winners will be announced at a black tie dinner in Ireland in May 2010.
