Newbury Speakers 25th Anniversary
On 6th June 2009 Newbury Speakers Club celebrated its 25th Anniversary by hosting a black tie celebration dinner at the Newbury Manor Hotel.
This was an amazing opportunity for past members and those associated with the club over the last 25 years to get together, meet people they may not have seen for many years and to experience Newbury Speakers Club as it is in 2009. |

The evening started with drinks and light music before a welcome by the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, Tony Henderson-Newport.
The first speech of the evening was delivered by current club president, Ray Wilton, who spoke about the club as it is in its 25th anniversary year. This was followed by a speech from Jenny Mills, who was one of the founder members of the club 25 years ago. Jenny gave her views on the club over the last 25 years.
After the first course of the meal, Freda Hendle, one of the club's past presidents spoke about how the club had changed since she was a member. The two key points that Freda focussed on were the use of technology and the more casual style of dress worn to club meetings, especially by the men!
After the main course a video message from Randy Lanning, a member of the St. Clair Toastmasters, Swansea, Illinois, was played. Randy, originally Captain Randall Lanning of the USAF stationed at Greenham Common, started the club back in the mid-1980s but was posted out of the area and eventually back to the US. Thanks to the power of the Internet we were able to track Randy down and invite him to participate in the celebrations.
The after dinner guest speaker was Hannah McKeand, the polar explorer. With some amazing pictures and video diary entries, Hannah enthralled the audience with the story of how she managed to set a world record for skiing from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole, a 690 mile journey that she completed in just 39 days.
Finally, Jenny Mills was presented with a crystal rosebowl and a lifetime membership award in recognition of 25 years as a club member.
A book was made available to give people the opportunity to write down their thoughts and memories of the club over the 25 years.
Photos and videos from the evening can be found in our Gallery. The 25th Anniversary Flyer and Menu for the event is also available to view.
The evening was also covered by the Newbury Weekly News, which published a short news story with accompanying picture in the newpaper.
We are always looking for history about the club and details about people who have served on the club committee over the 25 years. If you are able to provide any information please use our on-line contact form or send it to the club at the email address shown at the top of this page.
